God Upholds Us

Take comfort in this thought – God upholds us. In these times of upheaval and uncertainty can we know anything for certain? Or is life a sequence of random events? Even stalwart believers in Jesus Christ struggle as wave after wave of adversity crash over us. We struggle to catch our breath, and some days we stumble through our routine in a daze. We may begin to wonder if God has loosened His grip and relinquished His control. If that frame of mind describes you then stop. Stand still. Reacquire your bearings. Don’t take another step until you tell God how you are feeling and ask Him for a new vision of Himself.

Fresh Vision

I found such a fresh vision as I numbly read through my morning devotions on an overwhelming day, Christmas Eve 2020 if you can believe that. This promise blasted from the pages of Scripture and stopped me in my tracks. I read it several times, and a spark of hope roared into a confident bonfire of faith. Yes, God is in control. He knows what transpires around me. He has power to intervene if such an action falls into His plan. I can live my days with confidence that He has a firm grip on me. Yes, I can know for certain that He will not let go!

Understanding the promise

Let’s dig into this promise together. God gave these words through the ancient prophet Isaiah, and Isaiah tells us much about who God is.

Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10 NASB

Note God’s statements of fact in this short verse. He leaves no room for wavering and wipes uncertainty off the table. Based on His character and His power and His nature God promises:

• I am with you
• I am your God
• I will strengthen you
• I will help you
• I will uphold you

This is solid

No matter the level of churn in our lives we can return to this verse, read it, devour it, and re-believe the words. Does God know about my personal situation? Or is He tied up with managing matters of a more global nature? Note to whom God directs His actions and allow those pronouns to quiet the questions.

You, your. you, you, and you.

Get the message? This verse promises personal focused attention. We can rest confidently in His hands.

God is…our Upholder.
