I have made great use of my now worn copy of Black and Decker’s Home Plumbing Projects and Repairs so when The Complete Guide to DIY Greenhouses showed up in the library’s RSS feed I wanted to take a look. Not that I’m considering a greenhouse any time soon, but I expected to find ideas and tips that might apply elsewhere in the garden. I was not disappointed.
The book covers greenhouses from every angle including design, siting, materials, and construction. Technical subjects like venting, heating/cooling, lighting, and water supply make The Complete Guide to DIY Greenhouses a garden reference book worthy of a spot in any book collection.
The Gallery of Greenhouses section with its color photos is certain to get any gardener’s heart pounding with the “what ifs” of dreaming. That section is followed by case studies of greenhouses showing construction techniques and useful tips to make the greenhouse project successful. Both kits and custom designs are described.
And then I found the Greenhouse Companion Project section, a baker’s dozen of garden projects suitable for the greenhouse or standalone in the garden! Designs are provided for cold frames, raised beds, bed covers, seed starter racks, workbenches, and planters. I am certain some of these will be added to my garden in coming months, like the lettuce table.
I rate this book as a “must have a copy” for the GodPlantedAGarden library.
