The last nine months have brought a swarm of frenzied tasks to our lists as we prepared to move and finally moved in December. And the pace has not let up with all the unpacking and decisions about the new space. I have more than 200 plants in pots which need to be installed in their new locations once the new locations are cleared and prepared. Our hellebores are blooming prolifically even in their pots.
We enjoy breakfast at the kitchen counter and have a panoramic view of the woods behind our home, the spot which will one day be spectacular shade gardens that you will want to visit. Shawn noticed a bluebird darting among the trees and vines one morning. I was too engrossed in my “Get ‘er done!” list to pay any attention. The bird returned the next morning, and I finally picked up on God’s gentle nudge. It is easy to forget about the birds, the lessons they teach, and work ourselves into a frenzy, isn’t it?
I scribbled a number-one-highest priority item at the top of the day’s list – build and install a bluebird box. I have an inexpensive and easy-to-build pattern I follow (bluebird box), and I had enough of my woodworking equipment unpacked so I built one. I even had a cedar fence picket we had moved from the old location.
Shawn is happy now, and waiting expectantly for visitors. I hope the bird returns, moves in with his spouse, and raises the first of many broods of bluebirds here at Gardens of Grace. Scripture teaches clearly that God cares for and provides for the birds. I waited in line at a Southern States store to purchase sunflower seeds for our feeder one winter. Behind me stood a mountain of a man with tattoos, Harley apparel, thick boots, and one of those billfolds chained to his pants. He looked like a good guy to have covering your six in an alley fight. His intended purchase? Bird food same as me, and I was reminded that God often works through us to care for the creatures.
Stop and breathe for a moment. Consider some calming words from the lips of Jesus.
“Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? “And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?
Matthew 6:26-27 NASB
“Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. “So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.
Matthew 10:29-31 NASB
Shawn, sipping her tea on her morning break, reminded me that our lists will never be completed. Sometimes we have to stop and think about the birds.
I can’t wait to follow the upcoming beauty! My Hellebores aren’t blooming yet.
Cindy, we are so excited about the possibilities. I will do my best to post regular updates as the gardens progress. I hope your hellebores pop out soon!
