My gardening buddy has expanded her collection to spaces inside the house. The tiny powder room seemed a perfect place to add greenery, but the only suitable locations were the toilet tank and the edge of the sink. Yikes.

I offered to construct and mount a shelf and even created a Pinterest board with a host of images of suitable DIY shelving solutions. In the end we created a custom shelf of Shawn’s design using a harvest of ideas she gathered in her musings.

After I marked the stud locations with blue masking tape she followed up with drawings and a tape model to give us a visualization of how big the shelf could be without overpowering the surrounds.

We constructed the frame using 2×2” S4S because of its uniform dimensions and stability. Joints were made using the Kreg jig. Finish is 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of the interior trim paint we use throughout our home.

The shelves were ripped from an old stair tread I had in stock, and I took care to preserve the elegant bull-nose edge. We mounted the shelves using a pair of #10×2.5” wood screws on each end. The screws were countersunk and hidden with wood filler.

The wall mounts are #10×3” wood screws into the studs. In this case we opted for some decorative plugs rather than wood filler in case the shelf must be removed someday.

The project took an afternoon of carpentry followed by three short painting sessions.

Of course, the real work is in the design. Great work, Honey!
