From my Mom’s vast storehouse of practical wisdom and knowledge came one liners which are forever etched in my memory. The good Lord knows we heard them enough growing up. One of her best – “Make do or do without!” We live in a world of complainers, people who are never satisfied, even though their lives are filled with trinkets and stuff. There is always something missing, some new accessory or option that needs to be added to make the toy pile complete.
I always wanted a sports car and could imagine nothing better than tooling around town in something that would get up and go when I mashed the accelerator. Right now I am driving a 1995 Nissan Pickup. It will do 0 to 60 in about a minute but it does come in handy for hauling stuff that needs to be hauled. Nikky, as my daughter tagged the truck, came with windshield wipers, nice rims, even a chrome bumper but there was no cup holder. Can you believe that?
I can relate to Danica Patrick’s dilemma with her $200,000 Lamborghini Gallardo. Seems it is also missing the cup holder. http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/news?slug=dw-wetzel_danica_patrick_lamborghini_mercedes_022012
Well, Danica, I solved my problem. I followed Mom’s advice to make do and designed my own custom arm rest with integrated cup holder. I needed to do something since the arm rest on the passenger’s side had fallen off anyway so why not add to the value of my truck and make my wife happy in the process.
The arm rest is made of solid ash and hand carved to fit the large sized coffee cup from Caribou, my wife’s favorite. It took a couple of tries to get it right but now it has been in use for several years and I have heard no complaints. Just a few laughs from friends who see it for the first time.
Hey, don’t laugh! It’s paid for!
