In the past year, I have been privileged to study the craft of writing through extensive reading and webinars. Absorbing data as experienced authors, agents, editors, and publishers share their insight is the fastest path I know for gaining knowledge.
One globally acclaimed author used a new technique. He queried his blog readers to recruit a team of reviewers for his upcoming non-fiction book, and 200 stepped up. The volunteers were given a full manuscript (PDF or Word), and about half provided feedback. Although he hoped for higher participation, Mr. Writer was delighted to receive pre-publication comments from 100 readers. Readers offered suggestions for improvement, and issues were raised about sections of the book, giving a chance for revision before the presses rolled.
I adopted a subset of Mr. Writer’s idea and approached several friends and former co-workers to get extra eyes on the manuscript for Go Eat The Cheese!, my latest book. Many accepted my offer, and I am grateful for their assistance. Their valuable feedback pointed out issues I had not considered, and improved the quality of the product. I plan to seek early readers to review future manuscripts. If you have an interest in joining the team, let me know.
Go Eat The Cheese! (2014, CreateSpace Independent Publishing) continues the snarky analysis of ridiculously incompetent management begun in Who Ate My Cheese? (2008, Lulu Press). In Go Eat The Cheese!, the reader will find 32 habits for becoming a successful corporate cheese eater including:
- Habit #5 – Fear smart employees
- Habit #12 – Yo-yo early and often
- Habit #20 – Prize process profusely
- Habit #21 – Dispense vacation guilt liberally
- Habit #25 – Count the beans
Is this a work of fiction? I will not name names, but I can share that each habit derives from a real world example.
The cover design is sensational (sneak preview above), and I expect to have proofs of the final book later this week. Once the print book launches, I will create a Kindle version for those who prefer e-books. Expect another post when both formats are available!
